Zoe’s never been superstitious, so when she and her best friend Mia have their fortunes read at a carnival, she doesn’t take it seriously. In fact, Zoe mocks the fortune-teller. But the woman gives Zoe a necklace to seal her fortune, and as soon as Zoe puts it on, unexplained things begin to happen to her. Her bike spins out of control, a fire starts in the oven when it isn’t on, and Zoe begins receiving threatening texts and emails. The necklace must be cursed! But when Zoe and Mia return to the site of the carnival, it’s gone! Can they break the curse before something terrible happens?

KPE Episode 268: "Captain Underpants and the Perilous...."

Seini-Mino and Toreka from Room 17 are on a roll with the Captain Underpants series.  This time they have chosen to podcast "Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants" by Dav Pilkey.  

Professor Pippy P. Poopypants may be the greatest scientific genius the world has ever known. Unfortunately, he has such a silly name that nobody takes him seriously. He's been laughed out of every major university in the world. If fact, the only place that'll hire him is Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. Hopefully, nobody at the school will laugh at his name (or make a comic book about him)... because if just one more person makes fun of Professor Pippy P. Poopypants, it might just drive him OFF THE DEEP END! This looks like a job for Captain Underpants!

KPE Episode 257: "The Music of Dolphins"

"The Music of Dolphins" by Karen Hesse is podcast by Mubasshira and Toreka from Room 17.

The novel thay have chosen to read is about a 'wild girl' , Mila, who is discovered swimming with the dolphins, and the story of people's attempts to make her truly human. Mila creates headlines around the world when she is rescued from an unpopulated island off the coast of Florida. She has been raised by dolphins from the age of four and is now a teenager. 
Researchers teach Mila language and music. She learns, too, about rules and expectations, about locked doors and broken promises, disappointment and betrayal. The more Mila finds out what it means to be human, the more deeply she longs for her island home.

KPE Episode 256: Claudia and the New Girl

"Claudia and the New Girl" by Ann. M Martin is a book in the well known Babysitters Club series. Toreka and Ala from Room 17 have chosen this book for their latest podcast and have obviously had some fun with the book and the recording and photography session for the podcast.

"There's a new girl at Stoneybrook Middle School named Ashley Wyeth. She has three holes pierced in each ear and wears long petticoats, bell bottoms, & hippie-style headbands. The other kids at school think she's weird and maybe stuck-up, because she never talks to anyone. She only talks to one person: Claudia....."

KPE Episode 253: "Captain Underpants..."

Toreka and Seini-Mino

"Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People" - the eight epic novel by Dav Pilkey is one of those "must reads".

In this book George, Harold, Sulu and Crackers end up in an alternate universe where the whole world is the opposite of their normal world. Good is bad, smart is not at all intelligent, and heroes are villains. There they meet Captain Underpants's evil twin, Captain Blunderpants and evil versions of George and Harold. Sulu and Crackers are kidnapped by George and Harold's evil counterparts and are hypnotized to be evil. Sulu becomes evil and attacks the good George and Harold but Crackers on the other hand, saves them.  You could fid out more about the story here.

KPE Episode 248: "Copper Top"

"Copper Top" by Coral Atkinson

Recently we were very priviledged to receive a complementary copy of the newly released children's book, "Copper Top" from the author. Coral Atkinson lives in Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand.
" Copper Top follows the fortunes of feisty young Irish heroine Aisling Lynch, and is set in the West Coast goldfields of the 1860s. The book is ideal for readers aged 9 to 13."
Toreka and Selena both read this book and after declaring it a great read, wrote and recorded this podcast about the book.

KPE Episode 233: "A Present from the Past"

"A Present from the Past" by Jennifer Beck is the subject of this podcast by Toreka and Selena - two year 5 students from Room 15.
They tell us of a story about a young girl who is reluctantly waiting at the airport for a distant aunt to arive. But she is excited when she discovers that the aunt is carrying a special gift from the past.
During the first World War, soldiers and nurses were given a very special Christmas present from the Princess Mary - a precious box containing sweets or tobacco as the royal family's thanks for the hardship they were undertaking. As well as enjoying the story, our podcasters obviously love the illustrations drawn by Lindy Fisher.

KPE Episode 220: "Tom Thumb" by Gavin Bishop

Ala and Toreka are publishing their very first podcast. These girls are Year 5 students and they are in Room 15. This book they have chosen to review is subtitled " The True History of Sir Thomas Thumb" and is written by a very popular New Zealand author at our school.
They tell us that this book is a collection of stories that Gavin Bishop has made up about the famous tiny fairy tale creature and they particularly like the one called "Tom Thumb and the Big Fish" and that is the one they tell us about.
