"A Present from the Past" by Jennifer Beck is the subject of this podcast by Toreka and Selena - two year 5 students from Room 15.
They tell us of a story about a young girl who is reluctantly waiting at the airport for a distant aunt to arive. But she is excited when she discovers that the aunt is carrying a special gift from the past.
During the first World War, soldiers and nurses were given a very special Christmas present from the Princess Mary - a precious box containing sweets or tobacco as the royal family's thanks for the hardship they were undertaking. As well as enjoying the story, our podcasters obviously love the illustrations drawn by Lindy Fisher.
Well done Selena and Toreka! I'm keen to get this book out now and read it! A great book review! I like what you shared about how sometimes we have things that don't look valuable on the surface - but in fact have precious memories and stories attached to them. Heirlooms are very precious, not necessarily in money value but in family history and tradition.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good podcasting girls. Malo lava.
What a polished podcast this one is - you girls have done a great job of reviewing this book and have made it sound very interesting. My grandmother used to give me treasures from her past and she always told me the stories that went with them. I still have all of them because they are very special to me.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to hear about what you read next.

Hi Selena and Toreka, I like how you retell the story so that we know what we would be reading if we read it too. I am learning to retell the story that I read in my class too.
