KPE Episode 335: Big Fish Little Fish

Unaloto and Kobe podcast "Big Fish Little Fish" by  Melanie Drewery.
Jeremy wants to win the local fishing competition. He has his heart set on the first prize of a spinning sure-catch reel and a snap-resistant rod. He has plans to go out on his friend's dad's speed boat, but then his grandad offers to take him out in his old rowboat - and his mum accepts on his behalf!

The author's message is that it's not the size of the fish, it is the reason for catching the fish that counts. A section at the back of the book has information on fishing and the whaling industry in New Zealand.

Tyla and Kayla from Room 17 are our hosts for this episode.

Melanie Drewery spins a magical tale, weaving the ties from the past that bind us all to this land called Aotearoa. Across the years we have all formed links and connections to the land we call home and no matter where we are in the world we will always feel that pull back to this special place.

KPE Episode 180 " Tahi: One Lucky Kiwi"

"Tahi: One Lucky Kiwi" by Melanie Drewery was podcast for KPE by Caprice and John.

This wonderful book was the winner of the Picture Book category in the 2008 New Zealand Post Book Awards.

It’s the story of a boy who for his news item at school tells the class about coming across a kiwi caught in a possum trap, and how the kiwi lost his leg in the trap and had an artificial one made for it. Anyone who knows how to count in Maori will understand why the kiwi was named Tahi! If you don't know, click here for a clue....
This book is based on the true story of the work by Weta Workshop, the Artificial Limb Centre and Wellington Zoo to save a kiwi that lost its leg. Weta Workshop recently created a special hand made cast for Tahi, a Kiwi who had lost his leg in a possum trap. You can read more about it here.

Dad's Takeaways by Melanie Drewery

KPE Episode 145 is "Dad's Takeaways" by Melanie Drewery. Sarah has been reading this story and SharonRose is her DJ. The story is a play on words about a kiwi family on holiday at the beach. The kids want takeaways for dinner and Dad says yes. However his idea of takeaways is different from the kids. They are thinking of buying something like fish and chips or McDonald's but Dad takes them down to the beach. He knows you can take away enough kai moana from the sea to have a good feed. In the end the family enjoy getting in the water and finding food like mussels and oysters to eat. They learn that you should try things before you moan about it! We hope you enjoy this story too.
