KPE Episode 276: "Duster"

Litia and Vivienne, Year 5 students from Room 15, have been reading "Duster" by Margaret Beames. This story will appeal to all dog lovers. "Fliss is playing softball at school with her friends when she finds a small, bedraggled dog by the boundary fence. It’s exhausted , hungry and responsive to the children’s attention. The name Duster is agreed on. The group of friends explore several possibilities for keeping their canine companion. They are reminded by the adults involved of the practical barriers to instant and unplanned dog ownership. A stopgap solution is found and Duster becomes involved in the school community, though not without unforeseen consequences."

Litia and Vivienne: I thought you two did an excellent job reviewing the story of Duster! I was very excited to hear that the teacher took him home. If he hadn't, then the fire probably would not have been put out in time. Do you agree with the author that every dog needs a good home?

  4. Hello Litia and Vivienne! I am a student from the University of South Alabama in the United States. I am visiting this site because of a classroom assignment. I like the story Duster! I also appreciated that Litia talked about how her dog, Jess, is similar to Duster. This made the story more personal. Great work girls!

  5. Hi girls, I am from Dr. Strange's class, too. I was most impressed by your use of "first, next, then, and finally." You are showcasing some excellent sequencing skills. In addition, your dialogue was very fluent. You made the story come to life as you incorporated personal experiences with your own dog. I wish I could meet Duster. I guess I will just have to read the book. It is so awesome to see you using technology at such an advanced level. I say advanced because I am just learning how to utilize podcasting and other technical tools. If you would like to see some of the things we have been learning here is a link to my blog. My Blog

  16. Hello girls, my name is Nichole and I am from Dr. Strange's EDM310 class as well. I thought you did a great job on the podcast. I have a dog that I found behind a building near my house. My dog is a Jack Russell mix and she is really short and really fat. She is white and has big brown spots and a brown head so I named her Cookie.

Anyway, I thought this was a great story and I hope to hear more podcasts from both of you soon.
