"Freaky Fish" by Feana Tu'akoi is brought to you by Simone and Kathleen from Room 18. In this latest book from the Kiwi Bites series they tell us about Richard and Braden who have to enter a Wearable Arts competition and come up with an idea that is a little bit strange. They really want to win this competition because they want to beat Candi and her mates AND Braden's famous dad will be there with a television crew. Braden is desperate to show him that he can be a winner too. They create a Freaky Fish and enter it in the Oceania section of the competition. In the podcast Simone doesn't tell us whether they win or not - but if you have read this book you could give us some clues in the comments!
And FYI (for your information) don't forget to keep checking out some of our first podcasts because you would be surprised how many people visit older ones and still leave us comments- including this author who visited today...
This is awesome!!! You are such clear speakers. I enjoyed hearing about the story and I must get it out of the library and have a read.

Hi Kathleen and Simone,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your outstanding podcast – you made my book look great!
Did you know that 'Freaky Fish' is based on a real Wearable Arts competition? The real Braden and Richard had lots of problems making their outfit (including blowing up the head!) and their costume looked just like the one on the cover of the book.
I have another short chapter book coming out now. It's called 'The Water Fight' and it's about a boy called Vili. You should check it out – I'd love to hear what you think!

Hi Feana Tu'akoi
ReplyDeleteYour book was really interesting and fun to read. It must of been hard making those costumes for Braden and Richard!
I can't wait to read your new chapter book that's coming out soon. I really think that it will also be interesting and cool to read.

Hi Kathleen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely comments.
I don't know if the real Braden and Richard found it hard to make their costume, but I do know that they were seriously messy!
If you want to see a photo of Braden (when he was quite a bit younger)ask your teacher to find the story 'Phantasie' in Junior Journal 26.
Happy reading!

ReplyDeleteHi Feana Tu'akoi,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for that really nice comment.I really enjoyed the book it was great. The illastrations look real and are so awsome.
My favourite part of the book is when they got all there equipment together and worked as a team.I wonder if Candy was a real character, she sounded pretty mean.
I can't wait to read some more of your fascinating books, they sound exciting to read.
Thanks again

Hi Simone and Kathleen .
ReplyDeletewhat a cool podcast. If I had to make a costume I would make a Taniwha. It sounded like a pretty arty costume.
looking forward to another great podcast.

Hi Simone,
ReplyDeleteCandy is not a real character - she's so nasty that I had to make her up! Her costume is real, though.
Siobhan and Ji Soo entered the same Wearable Arts competition as Braden and Richard. Unlike the boys, they made their costume without having any dramas. Then I 'borrowed' it for Candy.
The illustrations are very true to life. I sent Eleanor Meecham photos of the real costumes, so she could copy them. I think she did a great job!
I also think you and Kathleen did a great job reviewing 'Freaky Fish'. I'm glad you enjoyed it,
Feana
