KPE Episode 414: "Boy vs Beast : Book4"

This latest episode of KPE has been created by two Year 8 boys from Room 20.  Kayde has been reading "Boy vs Beast : Battle of the Worlds - Book4" by  Mac Park and Cruz interviews him about the book.
The main character is a 12 year old boy called Kai Masters and and he lives in a world surrounded by monster-like beasts. A wall surrounds the humans protecting them from the beasts and Kai is one of the security guards on the wall.


"Only a wall lies between the Beasts of Beastium and Earth -and Kai Masters, border guard. When a freaky red tornado hits, Kai knows it's time for battle. Kai chooses his Astro-Jet Striker to battle the wind beast. Can it win over a wind attack?"

KPE Episode 413: True Mystery Stories

Room 20 have kicked off the year for KPE with two of the Year 8 students creating a podcast of "True Mystery Stories" by Terry Deary. What makes people want to solve a mystery?  Cruz and Matthew R discuss this book which has seven short stories.


There are some things that can never be explained. Find out: how one woman checked into a Parisian hotel - and then disappeared?, why a flight never returned, with no sign of wreckage or survivors? & if the ghosts of Borley rectory can ever rest in peace? You will uncover some mysterious events from real life and decide what you think really happened.

KPE Episode 278: "No More Moas"

"No More Moas" by Duncan Scott is podcast by Cruz and Kayde from Room 17.

Through their podcast the boys share a lot of useful information about New Zealand birds and wildlife. They have used their artistic talents to include some animations in the podcast as well.

KPE Episode 277: "How the Kumara came to Aotearoa"

"How the Kumara came to Aotearoa" by Bea Hamer tells how Ruakapanga sent kumara across the sea from Hawaiiki and why he later sent pests to destroy them.

This book, which Cruz and Joe have chosen to podcast, is a retelling of a Maori legend based on a version of the story by Pine Taiapa. . You can see an excerpt of that below.

KPE Episode 273: "Destination Disaster"

Matthew and Cruz from Room 17 have been enjoying another Fleur Beale book, "Destination Disaster"
"Who would have guessed that a simple fishing trip could end like this? Jem and his grandfather, 'Pa', are completely cut off from civilisation and their food is running out fast. Worst of all, Pa is in no condition to help.... If either of them are to survive the disasterous trip, Jem will have to think of something, and fast!"

KPE Episode 242: "Why Do Dogs Sniff Bottoms?"

Do you really want to know? Well then, Aidan and Cruz from Room 15 discuss this book which has delighted countless New Zealand kids; "Why Do Dogs Sniff Bottoms?" by Dawn McMillan & Bert Signal. This fun story provides an answer to the age old question and Dawn tells us that Bert Signal first heard about it in an old 1930's rugby song. That would be fun to listen to as well.
This book is so popular with Pt England students that it was one of the very first podcasts ever published on KPE back on Sept 24 2005. It was Episode 3 of KPE and was presented by Paul and Livingston who are now in Year 10 at college. You can listen to their version and compare it by clicking here.

KPE Episode 221: "A Can of Worms" by Peter Bromhead

Cruz and Blessing talk to us about this incredible story about a boy called Angus who discovers something moving in a can of spaghetti he opens. He believes the spaghetti is alive but nobody else seems concerned at his amazing discovery! His mother is too busy to look and his sister thinks it’s just another practical joke. So Angus takes the spaghetti to school and tries to get help from the teachers. They can’t help so Angus consults rocket scientist Dr Von Brawn, who even rings up NASA, but no luck! An Italian chef and a worm farmer have a part in this story too.The book seems to have some pretty 'yuck' things in it from what we hear, but they really enjoyed reading it.
We wonder how many of you like eating spaghetti out of a can? Or do you prefer real spaghetti?

"Hangi" by Trish Puharich

KPE Episode 142 is about a book called "Hangi" by Trish Puharich from the School Journal Story Library. Johnny has read this book and has Cruz as his DJ for the podcast. Both boys are Year 6 students from Room 18 and this is their first podcast. Hangi is a cool book which shows us how to make a hangi using wonderful photos taken by Sarah Hunter. The kids in the story get to make a hangi at school. We see how they prepare the food and the hangi pit, and of course we get to see them eating it at the end.
We were surprised to find out that Johnny has never eaten a hangi! Cruz is very fond of them though. Do you like eating hangi?
